Frances Costelloe is an artist, illustrator and garden designer based in London. She works across a variety of mediums to create unique objects and spaces made to last. The natural world inspires her practice: from the science and artistry of planting design to organic line drawings and handmade ceramics.

Art & Illustration

As an artist and illustrator, Frances works primarily in Indian ink on paper, alongside watercolour, pastels and charcoal. It's a philosophy that runs through everything she makes: once an ink line is drawn, there's no going back, and the same is true of the dipping glaze she uses on ceramics, like painting with sand. That commitment shapes a style built on freedom within constraint. Her free-flowing marks return again and again to a handful of recurring motifs, classical forms, the face, tulips, and shells, born of a lifelong fascination with the natural world. Her work has moved from limited edition prints and homeware into a series of collaborations and ceramics.

Frances Costelloe is a North London based garden designer creating bespoke planted spaces across the city and beyond. Her design work draws on a deep understanding of seasonality, place and plant form, resulting in gardens that feel considered and natural in their setting. Frances works with private clients on projects ranging from small urban courtyards to larger family gardens, offering a full design service from initial concept through to planting plans. Her background as a professional artist and illustrator, working across ink, pastel and watercolour, informs the way she approaches composition, line and texture in the garden itself. Frances welcomes enquiries for new garden design projects across London and the UK.
